“So, how’d it go? Your traveling chat with Lobo that is.”

“Uh, it was another weird time with our local shaman, as you can imagine.” I took a quick glance out at the dock before giving her what felt like a weak smile. “I’m not sure how to even begin explaining it to you.

“We were right about one thing though. Lobo says Mom definitely appeared so she could warn me something might happen. He says whatever this event is, it could be dangerous and it also involves you—maybe even other people.” I tried not to let her see how deeply my time with Lobo had affected me, but the look on her face said she saw right through my attempted cover-up. Increasingly, we both seemed to be able to read each other’s emotions no matter what we said or didn’t say.

Carla raised both eyebrows, took my hand and squeezed it. “Ohhh no, not again! I thought we left all that business with your ancestor behind us at the National Cemetery.”

“We did but—” Down the hall, a toilet flushed giving me a chance to put that discussion and any concerns Carla had on hold for a while. “Come on, Lobo’s on his way so let’s set the food out.” As I spoke, I pulled loose from her hand, and I hoped, from her concerned gaze.

Instead of responding, Carla walked over to the couch, pulled something out of her purse and came back to me. Seconds later, she held up a small mirror in front of my face, making me look at it. “Don’t try to hide from me, Jeff. Take a look at yourself and tell me what you see.”

A former award winning educator, Doug writes about things paranormal and historical. His interest in the paranormal comes from personal experiences as detailed in the nonfiction adult book he and wife wrote titled, An Explosion of Being: An American Family's Journey into the Psychic. Out of those events and extensive historical research, he then created Sliding Beneath the Surface for young adults, Book I of the St. Augustine Trilogy. Doug set his trilogy in the oldest and most haunted city in the United States, St. Augustine, Florida.
